I know a 12 year old that is still scared to death because of ghosts. She doesn’t like to be alone upstairs at night. I think it’s because there are a lot of odd noises like when you walk in the hallway it squeaks, the cats sometimes make noise, and walking downstairs can sometimes cause the ceiling to squeak. Can you help me to help her?
I don’t know that ghosts aren’t real, but I want to convince her that they are.

Many people believe in ghosts, and even interact with them. Don’t try to convince the 12 yr old they don’t exist, when there is reason to believe they DO! Let her be in the part of the house where she is most comfortable until she understands that the ghosts won’t harm her

You can’t say ghosts aren’t real…you never know.
Real GhostsEveryone is freaked out by creepy noises at night. Maybe do some research, I mean a ghost isn’t gonna be randomly tormenting you unless, like, someone died in your house or you did something bad or something…

My sister was years younger than me and had the same problem. I made her face her fears in two stages. First we just sat up all night in her room with the lights out. Every time we heard a noise we talked about what it was. By midnight she was asleep and all those sounds that are spooky when your alone in a dark room are ok when you have an adult with you. Second i took her for a walk in the cemetery at night (we lived two streets away from the cemetery). Just to show her that the dead cant hurt her. I suggest you stop her from watching scary movies too.

Who says ghosts aren’t real? I’ve had some crazy experiences in abandoned buildings in the bayous of New Orleans.
Maybe a better approach would be to convince her there are no ghosts in that house. And if you feel it is appropriate, and if she will respond well, that most ghosts do not do us harm or mean to scare us anyways.
Explain to her how wood floors can expand and contract with different temperatures, and the rubbing of planks on planks and planks on nails is what causes the squeaking noises.

People are afraid of things they don’t understand.
Educate her about ghosts. Maybe do some research on your property. Let her know that ghosts sometimes just don’t know that they’ve passed on. They are people who have lost their way.
Also.. be aware that children are much more susceptible to paranormal phenomenon. Don’t disregard her feelings, telling her she’s silly or that ghosts are nonsense won’t help her get over it…. remember, knowledge is power.
Let her watch Ghost Hunters on the Sci-Fi channel… informative and non-threatening.

Step one, buy a realistic looking alien mask and some night when she’s fast asleep just walk into her room while wearing it and stare at her. Make a light sniffling sound or something to wake her. She’ll be so traumatized and afraid of aliens that she won’t care about ghosts anymore. On second thought, that might be a bit extreme and may result in her needing years of therapy…maybe you should just buy her a night light or a fan to block out noise.

The fear of ghosts is commonly called “Phasmophobia.” Another term for the same thing is called “Spectrophobia” or the “fear of spectres.” Ask your daughter if she can imagine her life free from the fear of ghosts.
Fear is man-made and can be overcome. Fear causes panic attacks and can prevent people from having a normal life. If she is living with the fear of ghosts, you must consider how much it is costing you in time, stress and family life.
Irrational fears hold us back from living life. If her case is severe, she needs counseling to overcome and defeat her fear of ghosts. It is curable, so why suffer further?
We’re not doctors here, so please, take your dear sweet daughter to a pediatrician for a thorough checkup. She could be suffering from depression as a result of her fears or vice versa. Ask for a referral for a psychologist who specializes in adolescents and get her an appointment as soon as possible. The right person will help her face her fears and get her on track. There could be more going on than you know.

I don’t think you can convince her that ghosts aren’t real. Maybe she’s actually seen one. I’ve personally had a few strange experiences that could be considered “ghostly”. I think your best bet is to explain that “if” ghosts are real, they aren’t there to harm her, they’re just unsettled in their present situation and can’t do anything to her.
